The techniques used in the carriage of such cargo included the use of permanent wooden dunnage within which spaces were designed to ensure proper ventilation. More recently, the shipment of bulk rice is by way of containerized cargo. As global demand for food has risen, now most rice shipments are made in bagged form onboard traditional bulk carriers. Therefore, the primary focus of this guidance is upon the carriage of bagged rice in bulk carriers.
